Earlier this year, we were delighted to announce the promotion of Laura Rees to Fund Manager, responsible for the delivery of NPIF II - FW Capital Debt Finance.

With extensive experience in supporting businesses across the North West, Laura will play a key role in driving growth across the region. Find out more from Laura about her background, vision, and what she is most looking forward to in her new role.

Tell us a bit about your background and career journey.
The North West has always been home, and I’m a proud Northerner with deep Irish roots. Seeing my parents emigrate from Ireland and build a successful company from the ground up sparked my passion for business and inspired me to pursue a career in finance, particularly in areas where I could help other businesses thrive.

I’ve spent over 20 years working in the industry, starting out with Barclays and then moving through roles at Bank of Scotland, RBS Invoice Finance, and NatWest Corporate & Commercial. Over the years, I’ve worked with all kinds of businesses, helping them access the funding they need to grow.

I joined FW Capital as an Investment Executive just before Covid hit, which was a challenging but rewarding time to support businesses. I was then promoted to Senior Investment Executive and, more recently, to my current position as Fund Manager. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m genuinely proud to be part of an organisation that makes such a positive impact on businesses and communities across the North

What makes FW Capital special?
For me, it’s the people and the approach. We don’t just provide finance; we take the time to understand each business and what they’re trying to achieve. It’s about building relationships, not transactions. We’re here to make a real difference, supporting SMEs across the North and helping create jobs and growth. And honestly, it’s a great feeling to know the work we do has such a positive impact.

What does your role as Fund Manager involve?
In simple terms, my role is about helping businesses access the funding they need to grow. I manage investments from the NPIF II fund, approve lending proposals, and work closely with SMEs to structure solutions that fit their needs. I also lead and coach team members, liaise with stakeholders, and represent FW Capital at events and seminars. Ultimately, my job is to make sure businesses in the North West have the financial support to thrive.

What excites you most about working with businesses in the North West?
The North West is full of ambitious, innovative businesses that play a huge role in the UK economy. Supporting these companies means contributing to regional growth, job creation, and stronger communities. I love seeing the real life impact of our funding, whether it’s helping a manufacturer expand or backing a dynamic creative business as they grow their team. It’s rewarding to know that our work helps businesses achieve their potential and strengthens the local economy.

What advice would you give to businesses seeking investment?
Be prepared and proactive. Keep your financial information up to date and be ready to explain how the funding will help your business grow. Transparency and a strong plan go a long way. And don’t be afraid to ask questions, building a good relationship with your lender can make the process much smoother.

Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing?
Outside of work, life is all about family, friends, and keeping up with my two teenage boys, which is a full-time job in itself! When I’m not acting as their personal taxi service, I love getting outdoors with our cockerpoo Molly. I enjoy exploring new places, finding great food spots, and squeezing in some fitness when I can (usually to burn off the calories from those food spots!) For me, balance is key, making time for the things that keep me happy and grounded.
